My top 10 things to do in Glasgow

Often neglected in favour of the capital, Glasgow definitely worth a visit. Glasgow is one of the most interesting European cities to see. To help you plan your visit and make the most of your stay, I have prepared a comprehensive guide to Glasgow.

So, what to do in Glasgow?

10. THE LIGHT HOUSE

Located on Buchanan Street in the city center of Glasgow, the Lighthouse is a cultural centre and a museum. You can climb to the very top of the tower to enjoy a 360° view of the city centre. If you can make it there on a sunny day, you won't be disappointed! Moreover, the visit is free, so it would be a shame to miss it. 

9. RIVER CLYDE

For a bike ride, a jog, a photo session or simply for a pleasant stroll, the trail along Clyde Canal is the perfect place in Glasgow. I recommend that you take a walk there at sunset where you can watch Glasgow all lit up.

8. GLASGOW GREEN/ GLASGOW BOTANIC GARDEN

On your trip in Glasgow, you can visit the Botanic Garden. This is a beautiful garden where you can walk amongst the flowers, cross the bridges over the river and visit the tropical greenhouses that characterise it. If you are lucky you will also be able to observe squirrels. Even in cold or rainy weather, the visit is possible inside the covered and heated greenhouses. Glasgow Green is another great Glasgow public park, located on the north of the Clyde River, not far from the city centre. It is a great place to relax and stroll. In the summer, you can even enjoy bagpipe concerts. 

7. SAINT MUNGO CATHEDRAL

It is one of the major tourist sites in the city. Situated on a hill in the East End, it is the nerve centre around which Glasgow was built. This imposing Gothic cathedral has an impressive architecture. The visit of the interior is free and you can also visit the crypt where the tomb of Saint Mungo, the city's patron saint, is located. 

6. THE NECROPOLIS

Right next to St. Mungo's Cathedral, you can find the Victorian Necropolis Cemetery. Situated on a small hill, most of the tombs date from the Victorian era and more than 50,000 people are buried there. The visit will allow you to discover, among the ancient tombs and mausoleums, a magnificent view of Glasgow. The cemetery is open daily from 7am until dusk. 

5. GEORGE's SQUARE

Considered as the heart of Glasgow, this pedestrian square is named after King George III. Here you can admire several statues of historical figures, have a coffee, stroll, rest on a bench... On the square you can find the Glasgow City Chambers, which offers free guided tours a few days a week at fixed times. 

4. KELVINGROV MUSEUM AND PARK

If there was only one museum to visit in Glasgow, it would be this one! The Kelvingrove Art Gallery and Museum is one of the most important museums in Scotland and you shouldn’t miss it during your trip in Glasgow. This museum exhibits a rich collection of paintings, sculptures, art nouveau and furniture. You will also find a section on natural history or medieval weapons. It is located in Kelvingrove Park and admission is free.

3. UNIVERSITY OF GLASGOW

The university is one of the most beautiful and prestigious universities in the WORLD. You will no doubt be amazed by its architecture, which inspired JK Rowling to design the School of Wizards: Hogwarts. Harry Potter fans will be served! You can choose to visit freely or opt for a guided tour if you want to know every detail of the history of the place and have access to more rooms.

2. BUCHANAN STREET

If you want to go shopping or just for a stroll, Buchanan Street is the place to be in Glasgow. The city's main shopping street is full of charm and surrounded by shops for all budgets. I also advise you to go to the Princes Square Shopping Centre where you can take shelter for a while if the weather is not good (which is often the case in Glasgow!).

If you've read my article about my favourite sweet spots in Glasgow, you'll know that my most beautiful discovery in Glasgow is (and will remain) the Stack and Still restaurant! Located in the city centre, it is the largest urban pancake restaurant in the UK. Pancake lovers will be delighted as you can create over 10 million pancake combinations yourself. A good excuse to let yourself be tempted and even repeat the experience, isn't it?
