Pre departure essentials

The Erasmus adventure can be frightening for many reasons! This departure needs to be prepared several weeks in advance, so nothing is left to chance. In order to approach the experience in a less stressful way, I have decided to provide you a list of my pre departure essentials. Here we go!

Put some money aside.

The savings you would make before leaving on Erasmus will help you to face the first often unforeseen costs (deposit, accommodation, shopping, transport, etc). Living abroad can be expensive, especially if you're a big spender or if you plan to enjoy your year with leisure activities and travel. Finding a part-time job before you go on Erasmus or during the Erasmus year can be a good idea.

Make sure my passport and ID card are up to date.

Your passport and identity card must be valid for at least 6 months from the date of your return to your country, otherwise you may be refused entry.

Check if you need a VISA.

Some countries require you to apply for a visa before entering their territory. Make sure you apply for one in advance.

Tell your bank you are leaving (and tell them again).

Inform them that you are moving to a foreign country (and for how long) to avoid foreign transaction fees or that they suspect fraud.

See your doctor.

Check with your doctor at least 1 month before departure to find out if you need to be vaccinated. You should also take advantage of this opportunity to get a prescription for essential medicines that you may need during your year abroad. If you use prescription drugs, find out about travel laws.

Have a SIM card unblocked until you find a local mobile operator.

Making sure that you can communicate well with your loved ones when you arrive in the foreign country is essential. If the mobile operator does not offer a large enough package: download the WhatsApp application which allows you to communicate instantaneously at no extra cost as long as you have Wifi. To be adopted by the whole family!

Store products you love knowing that you probably won't be able to find them where you're going.

Get an adapter for electrical outlets so you can recharge your devices.
